These seldom seen cents were minted at the Philadelphia mint from 1859 to 1909, and were also produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1908 and 1909. The coin was designed by Charles Barton Longacre, chief engraver at the U.S. Mint from 1844-1869. This coin was discontinued in 1909, when it was replaced by the Lincoln cent.
